If you want to learn how to create animated videos, you’ve come to the right place. At Tricks Studio, we can call on more than 30 years’ collective experience in the animation and motion design industry, having created countless animations for our valued clients. Below, we show you how to make animated videos including all the tools you’ll need to achieve that professional finish.

Animated videos can begin life as a number of different images including illustrations, original designs and computer-generated drawings. These are then put through a design and layout process that orders them into photographic sequences to create the eye-catching illusion that the images are moving. They can be drawn in a wide range of styles and are used to create an engaging story-telling experience for viewers.

What are the different kinds of animated videos?

There are many different types of animated video (including animated explainer videos, whiteboard animation videos and motion graphic videos).

However, the three main kinds of animated video are 2D, 3D and stop-motion animation. 2D animated videos (like comics and cartoons) create the illusion of movement in a two-dimensional space.

Similarly, 3D animated videos create the same illusion of action but in a three-dimensional space, a style often found in video games and many modern films.

The final primary type of animated video is stop-motion. This process involves capturing individual frames of physical objects that are manipulated in small increments to appear as though they are moving once the frames are played in quick succession.

What do you need to create an animated video?

Regardless of whether you’re a professional animation studio (like us) or an amateur with a creative streak, in order to create quality animated videos, the most important tool you’ll need is a powerful animated video maker.

From Canva, Vimeo and Moovly to Biteable, Adobe and Renderforest, there exists a wide range of animated video makers that you can explore.

Varying in price and features, it’s worth doing your research to find the best animated video maker to suit your experience, budget and requirements. Flexible pricing, a user-friendly interface, audio tools and a built-in character creator are all fantastic tools and features that can make producing animated videos both faster and easier.

How to make animated videos

Once you’ve picked out the best animated video maker for your business, you can begin to create a selection of animated videos based on your needs. To do this, you’ll need to follow the design process of the particular animated video maker you’ve chosen to use. However, most animated video makers will have the following steps;

  1. Start by choosing a template

If you’re new to animation and design, it’s best to choose an animated video maker with templates, so there’s no need to create an original animated scene from scratch. Many animated video makers will give you access to a library of pre-animated clips and scenes for you to customise and pull together with ease.

  1. Animate and synchronise

After you’ve selected the clips and objects you want to use in your animation, you can begin to bring them to life with motion and synchronisation. At this stage of the process, you can decide how and where you want them to appear alongside how long you want them to appear for. Whether you want objects and text to fade, flow or whizz across the screen, you can choose the right animation to tell your story here.

  1. Add audio and/or voice-over

To increase viewer engagement and set the mood of your animated video, it’s important to utilise royalty-free music and sound effects to their fullest. Whether it’s an upbeat track or sound effects for an attention-grabbing alarm clock, adding and synchronising these audio snippets is an important step in the video animation process.

  1. Publish and share

Once you’ve created the finished article, you’ll be able to publish it and download the animated video. From here, you’ll be able to share it on your social media, integrate it into your website or store it in a shared online space as part of your internal communication resources.
