Explaining The Why Behind Tech Tools With Animated Video
Our client, a leading Fortune 500 company, has some of the world's best talent, but how do they ensure time is being used in the most effective and efficient way? Software tools are only as good as the information inputted. To help them Tell It Better, we launched a series of explainer animations to show, inspire and educate the staff on why these tools would help them in the medium and long term.
The opportunity
Our clients resourcing & people management tools were relaunched in 2023 after a series of fixes and updates to a previous version. These tools were introduced company-wide to nearly 100,000 employees and would form part of their day-to-day life.
Through our briefing process, it became clear that whilst we needed to explain the individual tools with their features and benefits, there was also an opportunity to speak about the tool from an ecosystem perspective. Yes, people needed to know ‘how’ to use the tools in a functional way, but it was critical to explain ‘why’ they were being asked to use the tools from an emotional and rational perspective. Once you have people bought into your why, you can then explain the how.
What we did
Every project has its own opportunities and constraints, that's what makes us designers and not artists. The SVP of this department has great influence within the company, almost acting as an influencer within the internal company social media. We saw the opportunity his recognition, personality and charisma gave us and used it to meet our brief of creating “something that’s never been done before” for our client.
Our videos started in a traditional live-action format, and then transitioned into animation with a bespoke characterisation of the leader through illustration. This combination of the two worlds of video gave us all the benefits of both; the recognition and humanity of video, with the possibility and creativity of animation.
The outcome
As is the case with projects bound by non-disclosure agreements, we can’t share the specifics on how the animated videos increased the number of users that have started using the tool since the videos release in 2024. We can’t even talk about the number of hours that the company has gained back. Nor the accuracy of the data they now have.
Our stakeholders were extremely pleased, and satisfied that we’d accomplished something “never done before”.
