Future-focused Animated Strategic Report
Sahara Group - Africa’s largest private power business - devised a bold ambition to get to Net Zero by 2060. The plan to achieve this was laid out in a 10,000 word strategic report they named the Energy Transition Plan. To help Tell It Better, we created an animated explainer video that used a characterful design to explain exactly how they would hit their targets.
The opportunity
Sahara had a wealth of information. Their team had diligently and thoughtfully created a strategy document that spanned 64 pages. It was rich with diagrams, images and over 10,000 words. They had data - reams and reams of data. They had story, innovation, change, disruption. All the building blocks were there. We saw that within these dense documents, there was a story to be told. A story of a large, predominantly fossil-fuel driven business changing to become sustainable through renewable energy.
This change was paired with an exciting audience. Internally, employees were keenly awaiting to hear how their company was going to innovate and be future focused. Externally, financial institutions and governments were watching from afar.
What we did
Due to the very specific information supplied within their strategy reports our first job was to distil down each of the 64 pages into a series of bullet points with a reference to page and paragraph. We could then move, shift, chop and change these bullets into a story, slowly threading together their story of change. Once we had the narrative nailed, the bullets were re-sourced from the original document and expanded back into beautiful prose.
We delivered a full-length animation of over 4 minutes. Whilst longer than our standard recommendation, the video wasn’t trying to stop people on social media, catch a glance on the tube or drift in the background whilst the kettles boiling on Eastenders ad breaks. The information was highly relevant and of total interest to its intended audience. For use in external comms we delivered a series of shorter sections of the animation.
The outcome
When creating communications, the outcome isn’t always measured in performance data, KPIs and Cost Per Clicks. In this instance, the outcome was a successfully delivered strategy communication delivered company-wide to over 5000 employees. Our client, the Corporate Governance Officer, noted her key internal stakeholders were happy, and that she’d received positive feedback from all.
The video was so successful that Sahara decided to use it at the top of their website home page.
